The Nellie (Patton) Markham Letters & Genealogy

Also soon to be published, "Tumbleweed" is a story about a family tragedy taking place in the northern prairie states just before and after 1900. Mostly in Minnesota, the story is about Nellie Markham, a simple god fearing tubercular woman who thought she found happiness and the perfect man who was laying railroad tracks across the prairie. Instead she found a man that grew tired of her and went off with another woman, leaving poor Nellie with four young children to care for which she could not do alone. As her failures mounted, she grew restless and like a "Tumbleweed" she drifted around trying to find her happiness. The Minnesota State School System came down on her and took her children away. That is when all hell broke loose. Nellie declared an unsuccessful war against the system, her husband, the foster families, and officials. Her quest leads her to Iowa, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Saskatchewan, Canada. Her final defeat is with her tuberculosis. Nellie loses her battle of this dreaded disease and is left alone and abandoned, dying in an unnamed institution in an unknown location. Genealogy of family and related lines (100 pages) included. Published 2007, by Paul J. Bunnell, UE, 331 pages, indexed, soft cover/plastic. Price $35 plus $4 S/H, additional items add $1.50 each. We accept PayPal 1">
