Yvon Cyr Passing

Chief Paul Bunnell - Sep 16, 2012

  Kwai All,
I was just informed of the death of my friend Yvon Cyr. I am totally shocked over this terrible news. This is a big blow to Acadian resources.

This breaks my heart. I was just talking with him at the beginning of this month about his newsletter. I am totally shocked. He was a great guy that I have known for over 25 years. I will pray and burn sage and tobacco in his honor. We had plan to meet up at the Acadian 2014 reunions up in Van Buren, Maine. We spent 3 days together in Van Buren in 2011 at the Violette Family reunion, the last year I was president.

Yvon Cyr

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Yvon Cyr of Guelph, Ontario on September 5, 2012 in his 72nd year at the Hamilton General Hospital. He was the loving and devoted husband of Judy (Thériault) for 50 years, and together they raised their two sons Daniel and Denis with steadfast love. He welcomed Denis' wife Becky with the open arms of a father. He was the most amazing Pépère to his grandson Nathan. He is also survived by his brother, Gérald "Gerry" (and his wife Albina) Cyr of GrandFalls, nieces and nephews.

Yvon and his brother started a radio and television repair shop in Grand Falls in 1960. They worked together until 1968 when he transferred toMontreal to work for Westinghouse. He moved a few more times over the years and settled in Guelph. He may have retired but never stopped working. Genealogy became his passion, devoting thousands of hours researching his ancestors and those of others. He particularly enjoyed researching his Acadian roots.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree of Grand Falls Council 2331 and 4th Degree of the 0621 Assembly. He was a past Grand Knight of the Grand Falls Assembly and became a District Deputy while in Ontario.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, September 14th at 4 p.m. at Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Grand Falls with his nephew, Father Ivan Theriault officiating. He was assisted by Fathers Pierre Thibodeau, Patrice Picard, Roger Dionne, Frederic Poitras and Lucien Levesque. The pallbearers were Father Daniel Cyr, Denis Cyr, Richard Moreau, Marco Cyr, Mathieu Moreau and Eric Moreau. Interment was in the Assumption Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home of Guelph and O'Regan's Funeral Home Ltd of Grand Falls.
